  • ESI Third Edition Revised Manual

Published by Three Star Press, Inc.

The Evaluation of Social Interaction (ESI)

Purpose: To evaluate a person’s quality of social interaction during natural social exchanges with typical social partners. The ESI is used to:

    • Test the person as he or she engages in relevant social interactions that have been prioritized by the client, and as the person interacts with typical social partners (an unlimited range of social interactions can be observed)
    • Measure the degree to which a person’s social interactions are polite, respectful, well-timed, relevant and mature
    • Score the quality of 27 social interaction performance skills
    • Facilitate occupation-focused documentation and occupation-based intervention planning
    Key characteristics:
    • The ESI can be used to test persons 2½ years and above, including older adults
    • The ESI is appropriate for use with any person who has or is at risk for experiencing challenges with social interaction and/or behavior in social contexts; the ESI may also be used to test healthy well persons
    • ESI observation results can be interpreted from both criterion- and norm-referenced perspectives
    • Computer-generated results can be used to document baseline quality of social interaction, the effectiveness of OT interventions, and changes in quality of social interaction over time
    • The ESI can be administered in 1 hour or less
    • The ESI can be used in any relevant and familiar environment (clinical or community-based)
    • The ESI was developed using many-facet Rasch analysis methods
    • The ESI has been standardized on an international sample of 6,552 persons with and without disabling conditions or medical diagnoses
    What the ESI “is not”:
    • The ESI is not designed to be used to evaluate for the presence of underlying neuromuscular, biomechanical, cognitive, or psychosocial impairments (e.g., memory, executive functions, emotional regulation)
    Who can administer the ESI?
    • The valid and reliable use of the ESI requires that person using it is an occupational therapist who has attended a specialized training course in the standardized ESI administration procedures and has calibrated as a valid and reliable ESI rater

A professional reasoning model for planning and implementing occupation- and client-centered assessment and intervention.

Based on her Eleanor Clarke Slagle Lectureship, Anne G. Fisher, ScD, OT, FAOTA brings together 40 years of experience to present a model for professional reasoning.
