Evaluation of Social Interaction (ESI)

The OT Assessment Package (OTAP software) is used to implement many-facet Rasch analyses that convert a person’s raw item scores for at least two observed social exchanges into linear quality of social interaction measures. These measures are adjusted to account for the challenge of the social exchanges and the severity of the rater who scored the person’s quality of social interaction. This process enables evaluations based on the observation of different social exchanges and/or scored by other ESI raters to be equated. The resulting quality of social interaction measures are quantitative representations of a person’s overall observed quality of social interaction, reflecting the level maturity, politeness, and timely communication while interacting socially with others. One quality of social interaction measure is generated by the ESI software and that measure is based on an analysis of all social exchanges that were observed. A minimum of two social exchanges is required to obtain a quality of social interaction measure that is valid and reliable.

The occupational therapist can use the OTAP software to generate reports that assist with analysis of a person’s quality of social interaction measures, documentation of the results of the ESI observation, intervention planning, and interpreting the significance of a change in quality of social interaction upon re-evaluation.
